Just days into the school year, students at Bridgeport High School are already transitioning into homecoming mode.

 

The theme for the Saturday, Sept. 20 semiformal dance is “Welcome to the Jungle” and the opponent for the Friday, Sept. 19 game is county rival Robert C. Byrd High School. Homecoming week will also feature a Thurs., Sept. 18 school assembly during which the 2014 Homecoming Court will be introduced.

 

Always a highlight of homecoming week is a city parade, which will be held Wed., Sept. 17. The procession will begin at 6 p.m. in the vicinity of Philadelphia Avenue and Main Street and proceed up Philadelphia Avenue onto Johnson Avenue and ending at BHS. Community organizations are invited to enter the parade by contacting Isabella McMillion at 304-838-2278 or imcmillion@hotmail.com.

 

“We need to know about how many people are in your group and if it will be a float or a walking unit,” she said.

 

The parade is organized each year by the BHS Key Club, for which McMillion serves as an officer. She served as coordinator last year and had a lot of fun doing it, she said. The parade typically includes groups from both school and community.

 

“Hopefully, all of our state championship teams will be in it and some school clubs,” she said. “There will also be football, freshman football, Little League teams and Benedum Festival queens.”

 

Also featured will be the BHS Marching Band. Represented on the homecoming court will be each class – freshmen through seniors. Each class will also organize and decorate a float. The floats will be judged and, as is tradition, a winner declared at the Friday night game.

 

Those who would like to march with the BHS Alumni Band can contact Beverly Atchison at 304-842-3099. Both musicians and front line members are welcome. Upon request, instruments can be borrowed for homecoming events. The alumni band will march in the Sept. 17 parade, as well as the Sept. 19 pre-game show.
