As Friday night’s football game against Robert C. Byrd High School and Saturday night’s homecoming dance are quickly approaching, BHS students are busy preparing decorations and showing school spirit during Spirit Week.

This year the Student Council voted to have “Welcome to the Jungle” as the theme for Homecoming. Committees of student volunteers have been meeting for weeks to turn this fantastical theme into a reality and the time to relish their hard work is coming sooner than normal this year.

With school beginning earlier this year, Homecoming was scheduled similarly, giving the Student Council even less time to get prepared.  As usual volunteering students have split up to assist with the five committees: decorations, field, assembly, reservations, and Spirit Week.

The decorations committee has the responsibility of organizing the transformation of the cafeteria into a jungle scene. They design an entryway, create decorations for the ceiling, and make a mural for the wall. Leaders of the committee are Maggie Lohmann and Katelyn Parker.

“It has been more of a challenge this year getting everything together with a shorter time frame, but many students brought great ideas to the table and have been working hard to turn them into a finished product,” said Lohmann, a junior student body officer.

The field committee has been hard at work preparing signs and banners for the football field, with each senior football player’s name featured on its own poster. These will be showcased during the football game Friday night, when the homecoming court will also be announced.

Meanwhile the assembly committee organizes all the details of the homecoming assembly, scheduled for Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. The assembly, intended to rally school spirit and unity, also includes student participation in games and student performances.

“It’s always fun to see students out there in front of their peers and being pushed out their comfort zone,” junior assembly committee member Ross Marra said.
The reservations committee takes the responsibility of creating a ticket design, selling tickets, and assembling the name wall. Green jungle-themed homecoming tickets have been on sale since last Wednesday and the committee has been creating name cards for the name wall ever since.

The spirit week committee was in charge of planning and totaling the participation in each themed day. The students kicked off homecoming week with a Pajama Day on Monday, followed by Mismatched Day on Tuesday, Favorite Team Day on Wednesday, Red and White Day on Thursday, and finally, Animal Print and Camo Day on Friday.

Spirit Week committee leader, senior Hannah Fetty said, “At our meetings we had a lot of different people from each grade. This was very nice because each grade got to voice their opinion about the themes they wanted.”

The parade to be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. is sponsored by the Key Club.
