Students at Johnson Elementary School were rewarded for good behavior with a nice cool plunge on a warm day. The school’s 2nd Annual PBIS Water Day took place Wednesday. Students meeting criteria participated in an array of water activities with teachers, Ms. Schwarm, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Galindo, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Price and Mr. Broadwater.

“They came up with the games and organized all the stations,” said JES Assistant Principal Heather Horne Holbert. “This was their brainchild.  Above all, the children had a blast!  It was a well-deserved dose of fun.”

Forty-five minutes – which otherwise would have been used in instructional time – gave the students a fun-in-the-sun experience. Grades kindergarten through fifth took turns participating in water games.

Each nine weeks, students are rewarded for good behavior. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.

“Johnson is a state-trained PBIS school,” Holbert said. “Rewards are held each nine weeks during the year.  Students have to meet eligibility to attend, meaning they have to have less than a set amount of checkmarks in a grading period.”

As the school year progresses, rewards are harder to earn.

“So we are very pleased with Wednesday’s turnout,” Holbert said. “We had perfect weather, and it was great to be able to host it right on our campus.  Being our first year at the new school, we wondered how it would work.  It could not have gone better.”

Wednesday’s activity was in observance of the fourth nine-week grading period – and the last for the 2018-19 school year. As can be seen in the photos – provided by Holbert – Water Day was a big success.

The outdoor fun, creativity and behavior of JES students were highly endorsed by Principal Vicki Huffman.

JES students are enjoying outdoor fun again today, participating in the school’s all-day annual Field Day at Bridgeport City Park.
