Local Quilters Guild Celebrates Nearly Two Decades of Giving Back to Community

By Trina Runner on September 30, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Quilting predates the birth of Christ and reflects the history of nations all over the world.  Over the course of stitching together fabric, friendships are made, stress is lessened and original works of art come to life.  In 2000, Millennium Quilters was formed in Harrison County that has grown to nearly 50 members today.  With a passion for the art of quilting and the mission of giving back to the community, the group is making quite an impact on both the members and the recipients of their quilts.

Millennium Quilters members represent all ages and levels of abilities.  Although some members enter their work in quilt shows around the state, others focus primarily on the charity project of the year.  This year, the group is making handmade pillowcases for the children at Genesis Youth Center.  Past recipients include the Ronald McDonald House, CASA, and homebound senior citizens. The guild also creates a one-of-a-kind quilt for the first baby born on National Quilter’s Day in March.

Millennium Quilters’ works have been raffled off for Fort New Salem, as well as to purchase materials for annual charity projects.  Additionally, they have made cancer caps for United Hospital Center patients.  In more recent years, they have added t-shirt quilts to their list of projects, giving a unique gift option to those nostalgic about sports jerseys or shirts.

On the fourth Monday of each month, Millennium Quilters meets at Maplewood Senior Living Community in Bridgeport at 6:30p.m.  Members share stories, ideas, memories and more as they create quilts, learn new techniques, and spend quality time with each other.  New members are always welcome and membership includes reduced rates for classes, trainings by notable experts, small group activities and a monthly newsletter.

Additional information about Millennium Quilters is available on their website, www.millenniumquilters.netor by visiting Millennium Quilters of Harrison County on Facebook.
