Meet BHS Senior Face Ben Mossburg

By Julie Perine on June 23, 2020 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Today's Bridgeport High School Senior Face is Ben Mossburg. Learn all about him here:

Tell me about your involvement at BHS the last four years. (Clubs, sports, etc.; community and/or church involvement too, if you want.)

I was heavily involved with student council, where I served as class treasurer all 4 years. I was a part of the baseball team all 4 years, where I was able to be a part of 2 state championship teams. I was also a part of the cross country team my sophomore year and freshman basketball team. I was a member of National Honor Society as well. Additionally, I attended American Legion Mountaineer Boys State.

What is your best high school memory/memories?

My best high school memories were winning state championships with my baseball team and preparing for Friday nights by being a part of the tailgate crew and co-leader of The Pit.

What are your plans for college? Where do you plan to go and what do you plan to study?

I will be attending the University of Toronto where I will study chemical engineering and play baseball for the Varsity Blues.

What is your life’s dream? Where do you see yourself 10 or 15 years from now?

My life dream is to be able to make a positive impact in the medical community by creating devices or researching innovative techniques, such as tissue engineering or cell therapy, geared toward helping those living with illnesses like me make their daily lives easier to manage. Being a Type 1 diabetic, my goal has always been to assist those struggling with the same problems as me. In 10-15 years, hopefully I will be researching these subjects and continuing to make an impact in this community.

Did any friends or teachers make a particular impact on you that you will carry with you beyond BHS?

I have a really solid friend group who have supported my dreams and ambitions since the beginning. Its going to be very hard to leave them but I know that they will always have my back. Teachers such as Mrs. Lohmann, Mrs. McCarthy, and Mr. Lister (just to name a few) have made a huge impact on my life. I have known Mrs. Lohmann for as long as I can remember. She has always been there for me and is essentially a second mom to me. I have been around Mrs. McCarthy so much through my 4 years and I wouldn’t change that for anything. Through student council and countless chemistry classes, it has been a privilege to be exposed to such an intelligent individual who just so happens to teach in the same field in which I will be studying. Mr. Lister has helped me grow as a person and a citizen through teaching me to think critically and for myself. For that, I will be forever grateful, as that is a skill I deem vital to any good citizen.

Do you work? Tell me about your job.

I work at Buffalo Wild Wings as a host and mow various lawns as a side gig.

Tell me some of your favorite things: Music, pastimes, teams, etc.

I’m always hanging out with my friends, playing sports, working out, or studying (unfortunately). I love traveling and eating good food. I listen to all kinds of music from rap to rock and roll and everything in between.

What social media platforms do you use?

I use Instagram, Twitter, snapchat, and tik tok

Tell me your thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic/school lockdown. How has this impacted you personally during your senior year? What, if anything, have you learned from this?

Just like everyone else, I was very disappointed to lose my senior year to something out of my control. It’s horrible that the best three months of high school were taken from our senior class. I wanted to be able to compete for another state championship and experience all of the senior activities that were in place for us. However, thorough this mess, I have learned to only worry about the things that I can control. While this is very difficult, I have found it is the most effective way to not only get through this rough time, but find positives in it as well.

Tell me a little about your family.
My family consists of my mom, my dad, my older sister Katie, our two dogs Buster and Layla, and my cat Butterscotch. My parents have always supported all of my dreams and ambitions. I have been blessed enough to be able to chase after everything I want in life and that is solely due to the support of my parents. My sister has been a huge mentor for me as she strives to achieve her own dreams. Seeing everything that she has been able to accomplish has driven me to be the best person I can be. Buster is a golden retriever and has been my best friend since we got him. Layla is a golden retriever and Irish wolfhound mix and is the latest addition to the Mossburg household. Butterscotch has been in our house since I was 2 and I can’t imagine living in a house without him. My family is what motivates me to live fearlessly and shoot for the stars in everything I do.
