The Miss Harrison County Scholarship Organization, under the direction of Executive Director, Emory Oldaker, is a preliminary to both the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Organization and the Miss America Organization.  On March 14, 2015, contestants will compete at the Robert C. Byrd High School Theatre for the title of Miss Harrison County and Miss Harrison County’s Outstanding Teen.  The winners will then compete for the title of Miss West Virginia and Miss West Virginia’s Outstanding Teen in June.

“After nearly a decade of not having a local preliminary to Miss West Virginia right here in our own county, I thought it was important to step up and volunteer to ensure young ladies right here in our community began having the opportunity to once again earn scholarship dollars for college.  There are so many talented and intelligent young women right here in our community and I wanted to ensure they had a chance to showcase it.” says Oldaker.

The Miss America Foundation strives to change lives and influence young women across the country and around the world. This Miss America Organization proudly offer academic and community-based scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies, as well as endowed scholarships for those young women attending medical school, working in special areas for military service awareness, and in the performing arts.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.

Rich in history and social significance, the Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit organization that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence.

Participating in the Miss America system not only helps you pay for college and prepare for a career, it also provides an opportunity to gain additional life experience, working on issues of importance to society, enhancing your personal and professional skills and developing your performance-related and other talents.

“I am also very pleased to see the support we’ve had from local organizations and businesses our first year back in the county.  Since we are a not-for-profit volunteer organization, it is only through the financial support of sponsorships we are able to provide scholarships funds.  My goal is to eventually be able to provide scholarships large enough to pay for a contestant’s entire year of college at the county level,” explains Oldaker.
