Off the Shelf: Holiday Festivities at the Library

By Sharon Saye on November 25, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library will be closed this weekend in celebration of the Thanksgiving Holiday, and will re-open next Monday, Nov. 30, at our regular hours, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays, 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.

The schedule of events for December is available at the library and online.  It is going to be a busy month with three holiday concerts and a performance of the Hamstead Stage Company.

It has been an annual part of our holiday celebrations to showcase the talents of our many young people during the holiday season.  The Bridgeport High School Choir and Chorus will perform on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.  The following Tuesday, the Bridgeport Orchestra will give its annual holiday concert, at 6 p.m.  And on Tuesday, Dec. 15, the Bridgeport High School Jazz Ensemble returns for its annual concert at 6 p.m.

For anyone coming to the library for quiet research, these are not the nights since the entire building rocks with sound especially when the brass section gets going in the Jazz Band.  It tends to be crowded so it is best to come early if you want a seat up-front.

The Hamstead Stage Company will be here on Friday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. to perform a live-action production of the classic children’s story, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”  The script is an original adaptation based directly on the literary classic, and includes children and adults from the audience.  The play will last one hour, with a question and answer session following the performance.

Fine Free Week occurs from Dec. 7 through Dec.12.  You can return overdue items and will not incur late fees.  This offer does not apply to charges on patron accounts for items returned outside of Fine Free Week or to lost or damaged items.

Regular programs will continue throughout the month including Dog Day on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Story Laboratory on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m., Pizza and Pages on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. and Kids’ Movie Night on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.  Story Hour is still set for Fridays at 10:30 p.m. on Dec.4 , and 11, but will be canceled for the rest of December due to the holidays.

Teens continue their regular Monday meetings although the hours vary slightly due to the programs.  The first two Mondays finish the Star Wars Movie Marathon, the third is Game Night, and the last is Teen Read.

Book Talk is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec.16 at 4 p.m.  This month’s book is “War Brides” by Helen Bryan.   The group is open to any reader, just call to reserve a copy of this month’s book.  Chapter Chat is at a new time, Wednesday, Dec.2 at 12 p.m. our lunch and prepare to discuss “Burial Rites” by Hannah Kent.

So mark your already crowded calendars so you won’t miss our exciting holiday programs.
