Registration is now open for the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Children’s Basketball League.

 

Children interested in participating in the league must sign up by Friday, Feb. 7. Due to limited gym time and availability of volunteer coaches, the league registration will be limited to the first 80 children paid and registered in each age division.

 

The league is open to all children in kindergarten through third grade and will consist of a six-week season and teams will practice/play two times each week. All games will be played at Johnson Elementary School unless otherwise noted. Evenings will consist of a half hour practice and a half hour game. Games will be comprised of two 10-minute halves. Times for each team will vary from week-to-week.

 

The age divisions will be kindergarten-first grade, which will practice/play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and second grade-third grade, which will practice/play on Mondays and Wednesdays.

 

The league will be recreational/educational in nature. Fundamentals and basic skills will be emphasized. Scores and standings will not be tabulated.

 

“Children’s basketball continues to be one of our larger programs,” said Katie Squires, Recreation Coordinator for Bridgeport Parks and Recreation. “We want to utilize our league to teach players the basics and fundamentals of the game. Our goal is to teach kids the proper technique at a young age. The league is about fun and learning. Each team is given an hour of time twice a week and within that time frame, coaches spend half an hour practicing and half an hour scrimmaging and the entire time teaching.”

 

Cost for the league is $50 per child or $75 per family. T-shirt and medal are included in the cost.

 

The league is also in need of volunteer coaches.
