A number of vehicle break-ins were reported to Bridgeport Police Saturday morning, law enforcers thereafter stressing the importance of keeping vehicles locked. Residents were advised to be on alert and to report any suspicious individuals or activity.

Since then, no such incidents have been reported, Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker said.

“These incidents seem to come in waves,” said Walker, adding that Bridgeport wasn’t the only community experiencing break-ins to unlocked vehicles over Friday night.

Similar break-ins occurred in Bridgeport last year and again just a couple weeks ago. Walker said at least one individual has been victimized twice.

“I just can’t say it enough. People have to lock their cars,” he said. “Unless there’s a purse or something in plain sight, whoever is doing this is going to move on if the vehicle is locked.”

The most recent chain of events took place in the Lawman Avenue and Willis Avenue area, as well as Crystal Ridge/Maple Lake. A wallet and some cash were among items stolen. Lt. Mike Lemley said in most cases, glove boxes and consoles had been rummaged through and personal items left throughout the interior of the vehicles.

The investigation is under way and a small amount of progress has been made on the case. No one has been identified and no arrests made.

If suspicious activity is seen, residents are asked to call 911.
