Shepherd's Corner Busy Filling Food Orders, In Need of Donations

By Julie Perine on July 07, 2021 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It’s been a busy summer for most, including Shepherd’s Corner.

“We’ve been doing a lot of food orders,” said volunteer Mary Ellen Depue. “And we could really use some donations, especially since there isn’t a food drive scheduled until fall.”

Staple food items are welcome, with just a few exceptions. Thanks to Bridgeport Rotary’s Souper Bowl activity, the facility is well stocked with canned soup. Thanks to Price Cutter’s large donation of canned green beans and corn, those items are also in abundance.

Some items particularly needed are spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, canned items (with the exception of those mentioned), canned fruits, peanut butter, jelly, envelopes of tuna/salmon, personal care items and cleaning supplies.

Depue said Shepherd’s Corner filled nearly 100 food orders in June and 376 since January. So far in 2021, there have been 3,574 people walk through the doors.

“That’s a lot of people in six months,” Depue said. “We’ve had our standard group and those who only come when they get desperate.”

The outreach facility tries to customize food orders, so food won’t be wasted because of food allergies or inability to prepare certain foods.

Located at 19 Pennsylvania Avenue, Shepherd’s Corner accepts food donations – as well as donations of clothing, household goods and toys – during hours of operation: 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Depue said the facility is blessed with faithful volunteers, a supportive community and the ability to help others during difficult times.
