Simpson Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss Day

Today marks the 111th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss and Simpson Elementary students celebrated in high style.

In conjunction with "National Read Across America"Day," children sported hats and hairstyles of their favorite Seuss characters and hallway artwork featured the same. Inside the classrooms, students learned about the famed American writer and cartoonist who, according to fourth grade teacher Kim Sabo, continues to teach through his works.

“His life lessons are classic,” Sabo said. “They’re educational for students, as well as adults.”

Students in Mrs. Carole Kinard’s fourth grade classroom said they like Dr. Seuss books because they are fun and they rhyme. Those students took some time today to read to students in Mrs. Trish McClain’s first grade class. They also created their own version of Yertle the Turtle.

In the fourth grade classroom of Laura Cann, who is subbing for Whitney Fowler, students were divided into stations where they listened to parent volunteers read, researched historical facts about the life of Dr. Seuss and created themed artworks. They were even using “Sneetches” as the basis for a discussion on bullying. Cann obliged in dressing up in a Cat in the Hat costume and some of her students dressed as “Thing 1,” “Thing 2” and other colorful Seuss characters.

There was also a photo booth for take-home pictures and the making of “oobleck.” With properties of both liquids and solids, the substance is featured in the book, “Bartholomew and Oobleck.” Other Seuss classics – “Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham” and “The Lorax” – to name a few, were being read throughout Simpson Elementary today.

Even the Pre-K classes got in on the action by reading stories and wearing hats to show their creativity.

Some classrooms of Johnson Elementary School observed Dr. Seuss Day also. Students brought in their favorite books and classrooms paired up for interactive student reading sessions. Other activities took place, as well.
