A month-long "Walk to School" initiative proved to serve its purpose at Simpson Elementary School. PTA President Teresa Lunsford organized the effort which consisted of four consecutive weeks. On Wednesday mornings, students in grades Pre-K through 4 met at Bridgeport Church of Christ, signed in, received a "passport" stamp and congregated with his or her classmates before making the procession up Worthington Drive to Simpson Elementary School.

Each week, the parade of students and parents was led by a special guest. For week one, that was SES Principal Loria Reid. Weeks two and three were led by Miss West Virginia 2012 Kaitlin Gates and 2014 BHS Homecoming Queen Hannah Fetty/Indians' quarterback Zach Spurloch, respectively. Doing the honors today was Bridgeport Mayor Bob Greer. Each leader provided a drum beat for the walkers. The event featured a little participation competition between classes. Most importantly, it served to encourage students to lead an active lifestyle. In its final day, the Walk to School initiative drew 76 students, Lunsford said.
