Spring Cleanup Returns to City; Free Pickup of Unwanted Items Slated for First Two Weeks of May

A citywide project from years past has been revived just in time for spring cleaning. During the first two weeks of May, residents of Bridgeport can take advantage of a free curbside pickup of unwanted items.

“We’re working with Waste Management to do a citywide spring cleanup,” said Director of Community Development Andrea Kerr. “Anyone who lives inside city limits can put out items.”

It’s a project which has taken some detailed planning and one for which the city is picking up the tab.

“The city will be broken into 10 different areas and those areas will be addressed on individual days,” said City Manager Kim Haws.

There are some restrictions on items – including paint, tires, etc. - and a flyer will be forthcoming and distributed throughout the community.

Haws said the upcoming spring cleanup is a great program and one which will help promote and accomplish a clean city and neighborhoods.

Kerr said about 325 houses will be serviced per day during the two-week period and all households should be covered in 10 work days from April 30 to May 11. Waste Management customers will not have spring cleanup on their regular trash pickup day, she said.

More information will be provided soon. Kerr said the city wanted to give residents a heads up so they could have ample time to clean out areas and determine items they want to discard. The city has been discussing the cleanup project for a couple years. There have been inquiries and requests made by city residents, especially since the city began hosting Shred-It Day, an opportunity to safely dispose of paper documents.
