The Lady or the Tiger Games in a Bridgeport High School English Class

In Frank Stockton’s short story, “The Lady or the Tiger,” which door did the man choose?  Did he choose the one with the tiger and die, or did he choose the door with the lady with a wedding waiting for him?  Last Friday, April 17, Mrs. Kitty Post’s Honors English 9 class found an answer to the question.

Mrs. Post had her class design their own games that would lead players to one of the two outcomes the man would’ve had.

“I wanted them to hand-make their games, using their knowledge, and create the outcome,” Post said.  “It was a nice project for them to learn how to work and solve problems together.”

Split into groups of three to four people, the groups had to work with people they wouldn’t normally work with.

“It was difficult;” Grant DuVall said, “We had to come up with a creative game that people wanted to play.  The game had to have enough obstacles to make it fun, but also had to ensure that players were able to reach the end.”

The games ended up very creative and very different from each other.  Some games resembled a form of Chutes and Ladders, others followed their own paths---one had a dice and students played the game of chance, and another even incorporated a mathematical aspect to it.

When Joplin Kehrer,  was asked about her favorite, she said, “Group Two’s game, ‘Which Door,’ was my favorite, because it included many twists and turns.  It was one that wasn’t like the others, which made it fun.”

The project was a success and ended up being liked by all the students.  After not knowing how the students would work with each other, it was evident that they worked very effectively and efficiently to produce the best games they could.

“I liked working with people I probably would have never worked with if it wasn’t for this project,” said Landyn Hewitt.  “Everyone had to pitch in and come up with ideas that would benefit the group.  It was challenging, but fun.”

With such an exceptional outcome, it can be assumed the project will continue for following years.  It will help answer the question.  Did the man choose the lady, or the tiger?
