Thursday is Jack Rollins Superhero Day for Harrison County Schools; You Can Participate Too

By Julie Perine on April 01, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Several schools in Harrison County, including those in Bridgeport, are participating in Jack Rollins Day on Thurs., April 2. For a donation of $1, students are encouraged to wear superhero T-shirts or other items of apparel to honor little Jack, who in December of 2013 was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer. Combined, those dollars will be donated to the Bridgeport family to help offset extreme medical costs associated with his ongoing treatments.

“Everybody in the community has heard of Jack or are aware of his situation,” said Jodi Wayts, teacher's aid at Lumberport Elementary School. “We as teachers in the school system try to teach students about caring, compassion and generosity and what a great way to teach kids to do all of that by participating in a simple activity that’s going to help one of the kids in the community.”

Information was distributed to the county schools through the county school board office, Wayts said.

Johnson Elementary, Simpson Elementary, Bridgeport High School and Bridgeport Middle School are among participating schools.

"I want my students to participate so that they can feel what it's like to put a smile on a child's face," said BMS Principal Carole Crawford. "They are such caring and selfless students. We knew they would want to help."

Participating students can wear T-shirts or other superhero attire; even costumes, but no masks.

Individuals and businesses are also encouraged to participate. Some area businesses are on board, as is the county school board office, Wayts said.

“Each school or group will collect money and donate to Jack and his family by depositing in the Jack Rollins Trust Fund at BB&T,” she said.

Organizers reached out to the Rollins family and were touched by the event, Wayts said.

“They were so supportive and so touched by the fact that we were doing this,” she said. “Their goal is to get information out to make people aware that nationally, only four percent of funds raised for cancer are used for childhood cancer research.”

Those who would like to send cards or pictures from Thursday’s event featuring supporters in superhero gear can do so by mailing to Jack at the following address:
