UHC Helping Provide a Care Givers Support Group

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on August 26, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Caring for a loved one can be stressful and challenging.  Finding out a loved one has cancer can be overwhelming. The Cecil B. Highland, Jr., & Barbara B. Highland Cancer Center at United Hospital Center now offers a new support group, Care Givers Support Group, to help patients’ families tackle the challenges of caring for someone with cancer.

“The cancer experience can weigh heavily on the emotions and psychology of patients and their families,” said Gretchen Hennigan, RN, UHC clinical navigator. “The Care Givers Support Group is for survivors, their families and caregivers coping with cancer, from newly diagnosed to any stage of survivorship.”

This face-to-face support group provides an opportunity to take a break from your responsibilities and nurture your emotional and physical health. The purpose is to provide a time and space for patients and family members to discuss feelings, concerns and attitudes in a caring atmosphere.

The group will be facilitated by Hennigan and other members of the UHC care team. Call for more information at 681-342-1793.  The first meeting will be Thursday, August 27 at noon in classroom 2, located on the first floor of UHC.
