Vintage Theatre Cabaret Set to Perform A Modern American Play

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 17, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This weekend The VTC Cabaret in downtown Clarksburg will play host to an award-winning modern American play.

Founding Producer and Artistic Director Jason A. Young cordially invites audiences to PROOF by David Auburn starring Lauren Swann, John Fallon, Allen Ludwick, and Gretchen Ross at The VTC Cabaret inside the Urchak Theatre at the Progressive Womens’ Association’s Uptown Event Center in downtown Clarksburg, West Virginia from Thursday, September 18 through Sunday, September 21.

“Our goal from the beginning has been to unite the best artists in the area to make great art for the area,” said Young. “PROOF is one of the best plays written in the last 15 years and this cast is top notch, each actor perfectly suited for their role.”

The winner of the Tony Award and Pultizer Prize for Drama in 2001, Proof is a work that explores the unknowability of love as much as it does the mysteries of science.

It focuses on Catherine (Lauren Swann), a young woman who has spent years caring for her father, Robert (John Fallon), a brilliant mathematician in his youth who was later unable to function without her help, her sister, Claire (Gretchen Ross), who wants to take Catherine back to New York with her, and Hal (Allen Ludwick), a former student of Catherine's father who hopes to find some hint of Robert's genius among his incoherent scribbling in over 100 composition notebooks.

The passion that Hal feels for math both moves and angers Catherine, who, in her exhaustion, is torn between loving her father and resenting the great sacrifices she made for him. For Catherine has inherited at least a part of her father's brilliance -- and perhaps some of his instability as well. As she and Hal become attracted to each other, they push at the edges of each other's knowledge, considering not only the unpredictability of genius but also the human instinct toward love and trust.

“I hope people realize that this is not a show about mathematics. It is a show about families, relationships, love, and trust,” said Young. “I know nothing about mathematics, but this play is so deeply rooted in the human experience that I connect with it during every rehearsal.”

With Direction by Jason A. Young, Production Design by Trina Byard, and Production Management by Sarah Young, PROOF will open at The VTC Cabaret on Thursday, September 18 at 8:00pm and play through Saturday, September 20 at 8:00p with a matinee on Sunday, September 21 at 2:00pm. Complimentary refreshments and desserts will be available at each performance. However, the Friday and Saturday evening performances will feature a Catered Cabaret Buffet provided by Liz Welch of Silver Spoon Catering.

The Catered Cabaret Buffet menu includes Bruschetta, Fresh Garden Salad with Homemade Ranch and Homemade Italian Dressings, Fresh Bread & Butter, Loaded Center Cut Pork Loin, Roasted Garlic Smashed Redskin Potatoes, Homestyle Mac & Cheese, and a Fresh Sautéed Vegetable Medley.
