By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 04, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

West Virginia University Extension Service in Harrison County and United Hospital Center will be offering a free series of classes at UHC aimed at improving the eating and lifestyle habits of those having diabetes.

“Dining with Diabetes” will be held at 5:30 p.m., beginning February 20 at UHC. The classes will be held Feb. 20, Feb. 27, March 6, and March 13. There will be a follow-up class on May 29 to check the progress of those who went through the class.

The classes are open to anyone with diabetes, those caring for someone with diabetes, or those just wanting to learn more about the diabetes. The classes include clinical and medical information, recipe demonstrations, and food tasting, along with exercise and stress management segments. The classes are taught by the UHC diabetes educator and the WVU Family and Community Development agent.
“We have made a significant impact,” said WVU Extension Agent Becky Smith, “not only in Harrison County, but across the entire state. We have shared the program with other states, and it has made a difference in people’s lives.”

West Virginia ranks first in the country in the rate of its citizens with the disease. But by making changes toward a healthier lifestyle, the person’s quality of life can increase.

Advance registration is required. To learn more about the program or to register, please call the WVU Extension Office at 304-624-8650.
Programs and activities offered by the West Virginia University Extension Service are available to all persons without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age, veteran status, political beliefs, sexual orientation, national origin, and marital or family status.
