More than 20 businesses and organizations totaling 140 individuals will participate in the 2019 United Way Day of Action.

“These volunteers will be doing projects that focus on helping our United Way member agencies,” said Brad Riffee, Day of Action coordinator for United Way of Harrison County. “Many of these non-profits have limited resources and their sole focus are the services they provide to the community. Many of them don’t have the resources or time to do landscaping work, paint or put siding back up that blew down in a storm. Our volunteers will be helping with those types of activities.”

Riffee said the goal of June 21 – this year’s United Way Day of Action – is to make a meaningful impact on the community.

“At Bi-County Nutrition, volunteers will be serving seniors lunch, cleaning up, power washing and planting flowers,” he said.

Other United Way member agencies include Boy Scouts; Central West Virginia Community Action; Empowerment through Employment; Family Service of Marion and Harrison Counties; 4-H Leaders Association of Harrison County; Girl Scouts; Harrison County CASA Program; Harrison County Child Advocacy Center; Health Access; Hope, Inc. Task Force on Domestic Violence; Legal Aid of West Virginia; Camp Catch Your Breath; People’s Hospice; Susan Dew Hoff Memorial Clinic; Read, Write, Graduate; Stars & Strides Therapeutic Equine Center; Literacy Volunteers of Harrison County; Learning Options, Inc.; Harrison County Family Resource Network, Inc.; and Homes for Harrison.

Most of the member agencies are centralized in the Clarksburg area, but some provide services to those who live in Bridgeport and across the entire county.

“Quite a few folks utilize Stars & Strides, 4-H scholarships provide funding for children to attend summer camp and Literacy Volunteers provide free tutoring,” Riffee said.

Several Bridgeport individuals and companies are providing key efforts in this year’s Day of Action.

Joe Spadafore of Allstate Insurance and Austin Thrasher of The Thrasher Group serve as chair and co-chair of the United Way Emerging Leaders. Several city businesses are loaning employees to take part in the June 21 event.

“It’s a nice way for them to give back as a company and at the same time it allows their employees to engage with the non-profits who provide lifesaving services to our communities,” Riffee said. “That’s one of the most valuable aspects of this day. Someone may come across a service they can take back to a family member or friend. Connecting people to resources is an exciting part of what we do.”

Ronald Lane, Inc. of Clarksburg is the official sponsor of this year’s United Way Day of Action. My Little Cupcake of Bridgeport will provide breakfast to the Day of Action volunteers.

To date, companies involved are: Ronald Lane, Inc.; My Little Cupcake; The Thrasher Group; Antero Resources; Steptoe & Johnson; Bridgeport High School students; Pratt & Whitney; Harrison County Power Station; Dominion Energy; United Hospital Center; MVB Bank; WesBanco; City National Bank; West Union Bank; Salem University; WYK Associates; Allstate Insurance; State Farm; DeepWell Energy Services; Fairmont Federal Credit Union; NCWV REIN and Harrison County Schools.
