Second Annual "Touch A Truck" Event Offers Unique Experience for Kids of All Ages

To a child, many experiences pale in comparison to the opportunity to explore the real-life versions of their favorite trucks.  For the second year in a row, YoungLife and WyldLife of Harrison County will be sponsoring a “Touch A Truck” event, organized by Billi Jo Brooks and Kim McCord.

The family-friendly activity creates a dream playground of large trucks, excavating equipment, motorcycles, race cars, fire trucks, ambulances, National Guard vehicles, and even a Waste Management garbage truck. Children and their families are encouraged to touch, climb, and sit in the vehicles, which are provided by local individuals, businesses and city personnel.

“Last year, even though the weather was very cold, hundreds of residents showed up to enjoy an afternoon of exploring the vehicles with their children,” said McCord.

The event will take place Oct. 8 at Lincoln High School from 12:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. with 12:00p.m. to 1:00p.m. being siren-free and horn-free for those with sensory issues.

“We wanted to allow time for all children to enjoy the trucks, so for the first hour, it will be quiet,” said McCord.  “After that, it will be noise and very exciting for the young explorers as they get up close with all of the vehicles.”

All monies raised from the event will support Harrison County YoungLife and WyldLife, which currently has chapters in Bridgeport High School, Bridgeport Middle School, Lincoln High School, Lincoln Middle School, and soon to be expanded to Robert C. Byrd High School.

The cost for the “Touch a Truck” event is $5 per person, with a $20 maximum per vehicle to make it affordable for all families.  Light refreshments will be available at an additional cost.  Additional information is available by contacting Kim McCord at 304-288-4930.
