BHS Class Brings Children's Classic to Life

Since 1963, parents have snuggled up with footy-pajama-clad children and read the classic book, “Where The Wild Things Are.”  The book nostalgically transforms an ordinary night of reading into a magical and sometimes scary land where wild beasts roam and rules don’t matter.  The lesson, of course, is that there’s simply no place as comforting as home, no matter how adventurous other lands may be.

On May 29, Mrs. Anita Horno r’s Parent and Child Development Class at BHS put this lesson into action as they invited three and four-year-old children into the classroom for a day of “Where The Wild Things Are” fun.  Walking through the “vines” of the doorway, children were greeted by all their favorite characters from the book, decorating the walls of the classroom.

In the middle of the room, a large tent and “campfire” provided the perfect setting for the students to make the story come alive.  “The kids were so excited and a lot of them knew the lines by heart.”  After story time, the students took the children to the gym for some monster-themed activities including monster relays and a monster version of Simon Says.

“The book has been voted the #1 Picture Book in the nation several times and with good reason.  The classic lesson and over-the-top pictures capture the essence of childhood and provided an ideal setting for our activities this year,” said Horner.  “The students enjoyed the experience as much as the little ones and they gained valuable knowledge of how to develop a lesson that is both educational and entertaining.”
