So, you’ve talked to your kids about senior pictures, managed to get them through homecoming and know just what they are wearing to prom.  But, have you had the money conversation yet?  Research shows that money ranks first among topics parents dread to talk about with their teens, so you are not alone.

When it comes to college finances, you are really not alone.  Bridgeport High School Counselor Jane Byrd has been helping your children prepare for the big transition to college for the last few weeks and now you are invited to Financial Aid Night on November 19 to learn your options firsthand.

Last week, juniors and seniors participated in a Finding The Right Fit workshop that led students through some of the tough decisions when it comes to finding the right college.  Topics of discussion included available majors, success rates, academics, environment, location, and admission requirements. “We know how overwhelming this process is for parents and students and we try to arm them with as much information as possible when they are making these vital decisions about their future,” said Byrd.

Thursday evening from 6:00p.m. to 9:00p.m.,  an all-inclusive financial aid workshop will be available for parents and their children who are heading off to college soon.  WV Higher Education Policy Commissioner Brian Weingart will take participants through a step-by-step process of filling out the FAFSA.  He will address commonly asked questions and clarify how to avoid errors.

The FAFSA deadline is March 1 in order to be eligible for any state or federal financial aid.  College admissions representatives will be on hand to cover Promise Scholarship questions and direct financial aid concerns.  There will also be a full session on how to set up a Promise Student Account to track eligibility updates.

WVU representatives will walk parents and students through the rolling enrollment process and financial aid options specific to the university and FSU will present about options at FSU and Pierpont.  An overview of other state schools will be available as well.

The free Financial Aid event will take place at Bridgeport High School on November 19 and anyone interested can attend. One-on-one financial aid assistance will be available next semester during College Goal Sunday.
