BHS Sophomore Wins Racing Purse, Proving Age and Gender Are No Match for Skill

When Danica Patrick was a teen, she made racing history by placing 2nd in the Ford Formula Festival.  BHS Sophomore, Sydney Rockwell, is making her own mark in racing history and proving that being a girl in the industry is very rewarding.

Rockwell recently won a $4000 purse for her Rock Bouncer Racing winnings in Ashland, Kentucky.  She is one of the youngest racers in the off-roading sport and one of a select few females on the circuit.  She proved age and gender are not limits to skill and determination as she even beat her dad in the race, finishing in 6.486 seconds.

Rock Bouncing involves racing specialized vehicles at high speeds across steep trails and boulders.  The oversized buggies are made to withstand repeated rollovers and designed to keep working while vertical, sideways or even upside down.

Rockwell’s buggy is named “UnderRated” and was built by Timmie Cameron.  “The name should scare the competition,” said race organizer E.B. Lowman.  “She has no fear.  She smoked all the boys.”

The Off-Road Anniversary Bash featured racers from all over the United States.  Among the competitors were big names in the industry such as Bobby Tanner, Shawn Talson, and Brandon Dillon.  Rockwell followed in her father’s footsteps to enter the racing world.  Her dad, A.J. Rockwell, is a veteran racer of drag bikes and side-by-sides and owns an off-road park in Philippi.  “I grew up with a passion for racing and the adrenaline rush is very addictive.  I am currently in 11th Place out of 54 drivers overall and I can’t wait to prove myself again in the next race,” Rockwell said.
