Bridgeport Middle School Student Wins State "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest With Promising Ideas

Political candidates might want to take a few notes from Bridgeport Middle School student Emma Dotson.  The Seventh-grader was one of only three winners in the state for the West Virginia Municipal League “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” Essay Contest.  Her visions of political influence included hometown pride, equality and kindness, all noble qualities that should be the focus of any campaign.

The essay contest was open to all 7th grade students in West Virginia as a means to inspire students to learn more about municipal government.  Entries were limited to one page and were to include the student’s perspective on changes he or she would make if they held the office of mayor.

As an avid writer, Dotson jumped at the chance to enter the contest after hearing about it in Mrs. Julie Turnbill’s English class.  Her essay began by encouraging citizens to do more community service.  “Whether volunteering at the hospital, the animal shelter or having a community beautification day, service builds citizenship and helps people realize how lucky they are to live in their town,” said Dotson.  “Hometown pride and a sense of community enhances the lives of all the citizens.”

Noting how so many people spend so much time staring at a screen instead of interacting, Dotson’s second suggestion is to create more activities and clubs for people of all ages. “Participating in clubs and activities help improve social ability and keep people out of trouble,” she said.

Her final platform focused on inclusivity.  “I would try to make sure people of all backgrounds are treated equally and strictly enforce a ‘no harassment’ policy.  I would encourage citizens  to learn about and respect each other’s differences,” said Dotson, who clearly understands the importance of being in a position to influence others.

Dotson received a plaque and $250 towards college for her efforts.  With the ideas she proposes, we can hope to see her on the ballots in the upcoming years!
