Not many things in life are more awkward than middle school.  The changes students and their families go through during these vital years can be overwhelming and complicated.  On Thursday, April 16, Bridgeport Middle School will host a Transition Night for incoming sixth graders to help answer some of the questions they may have.

“The night is basically an open house to introduce students and parents to BMS,” said organizer Tracey Gould.  “The WVU interns have worked hard all year to coordinate activities for the night and to make sure all concerns are being addressed.”

Parents are to meet in the BMS Gymnasium at 6 p.m. to be introduced to the staff and interns of BMS.  “This is a great opportunity to meet the teachers and visit displays of some of our extra-curricular groups.”

After introductions and a brief overview by BMS Principal Carole Crawford, parents and students will be taken on a guided tour to classrooms, the lunchroom, the library, and more.  “Typically, parents and students are relieved after the tour, realizing that the transition is manageable after becoming familiar with the building and staff.”

Student groups will be on hand to show the incoming sixth graders some of the extra-curricular groups in which they can become involved.  “We will have members of the Quiz Bowl , RAZE, Robotics, and Student Council available for questions and there will be demonstrations of options involving band, choir, jazz band, show choir and the steel drum band.

Athletic Director, Art Petitto, will present the Athletic options and the parents will have the opportunity to join the Athletic Boosters on Transition Night. Librarian Melissa Hinerman will explain club options and library rules and an overview of volunteer opportunities will be given to students as well.

On classroom tours, teachers will review daily schedules, discuss rules and resources and how to use LiveGrades to keep in constant communication with the school.  All incoming sixth graders and their parents are invited to attend the Transition Night.
