Free Governor's School of Entrepreneurship for Students; Registration Deadline Approaching

By Trina Runner on April 23, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Recently, Bridgeport High School Junior Christina Guirguis was awarded a $10,000 scholarship for her business plan proposal.  That proposal started last summer at the first annual Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship (GSE) and has inspired countless young students around the state since its inception.

With over 97% of West Virginia companies classified as small business, it’s not surprise the state wants to invest in the youth in an effort to increase innovation and entrepreneurship across the Mountain State.  Last year’s GSE took place at Marshall University.  This year, the fun moves closer as West Virginia University houses the program for 21 days in July.

The residential summer program will begin on July 5, providing a hands-on, educational experience to 60 high school students.  Applicants must submit an application as well as a 60-second YouTube pitch selling themselves as candidates for the free program.

During the three-week session, students will attend workshops, work with mentors, and develop a business plan to launch a new venture.  Students can also earn three hours of college credits during the GSE. The experience will also allow students to have a realistic view of what goes into starting and sustaining a company in West Virginia.

The program is funded through the Legislature and is provided at no cost to the students or their parents.  Applications are due by April 25 and candidates will be notified by May in order to plan on attending in July.  Additional information is available by contacting Julia Bolt at Julia.bolt@mail.wvu.edu.Recently, Bridgeport High School Junior Christina Guirguis was awarded a $10,000 scholarship for her business plan proposal.  That proposal started last summer at the first annual Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship (GSE) and has inspired countless young students around the state since its inception.
