Following in the legacy of her grandmother, Bayleigh Burge is one of six BHS juniors who will be attending the 2016 American Legion Auxiliary Rhododendron Girls State, to be held at Wheeling Jesuit University June 12-17.

“My grandmother, Ann Smith, was the President of the American Legion Lady’s Auxiliary for Bridgeport American Legion Post 68 in the 1980’s,” said Burge.  “She has been a real inspiration to me and I am excited to attend Girls State and learn all about the principles for which the legion stands.”

Joining Burge will be Abby Vavrick, Victoria Richards, Carolyn Ferrell, Haley Fiber, Autumn Feist and Mackenzie Steele.  Each of the girls have been sponsored by local civic groups, including Bridgeport American Legion, Bridgeport Rotary, Bridgeport Lions Club, Columbian Club, Bridgeport Women’s Club and Knights of Columbus.

Started in 1937, Girls State is dedicated to teaching young women responsible citizenship and love for God and country.  Nearly one million girls have now had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works.

After finishing their junior year of high school, the girls will spend an intensive week of working as self-governing citizens, learning to participate in the functions of their state’s government.  Last year, Bridgeport High School student Katie Mossburg served as Governor of Girls State, representing our area for the first time in over 30 years.  This year, the six girls representing BHS will have the opportunity to follow in her footsteps as they choose various government and civilian positions to represent in the mock society.

“I am so excited for this amazing opportunity to broaden and strengthen my education while building new relationships with so many amazing people from around the state,” said Victoria Richards.  The girls will learn leadership skills and understand the role of citizens in a democratic society and the important role of women in public life.

The six girls were chosen based on their grade point average, high school principal’s recommendation, attendance, and community service in and out of school.
