The community’s littlest science enthusiasts can gear up for another season of Little Explorers. Offered through Harrison County Parks and Recreation, the class series is taught by Anita Jesmer at the Benedum Civic Center Wednesdays from September through November.

The first 45-minute session kicks off Sept. 10. The theme is “Ecology and Going Green.”

“We’re going to be talking about how solar energy is used to drive small motors to move and we’ll be doing water purification – how to purify contaminated water for drinking water,” she said.

The class will also focus on recycling. Among activities are crafts made from objects of nature.

That class will run Sept. 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1.

October’s session will be entitled “Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Times.”

“We’ll be excavating fossils and bones of dinosaurs and putting them together,” Jesmer said. “We’ll also be exploring dinosaur tracks, making tracks and getting clues about their movement and behavior.”

Featured dinosaurs will, of course, include the infamous T-Rex.

That class runs Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29.

The last 2014 Little Explorers class will be held three weeks in November – sessions meeting Nov. 5, 12 and 19. Themed “Mad Science,” the series will feature a number of creative hands-on science experiments.

A 10 a.m. class will accommodate preschoolers ages 2 ½ through 5 with 6 p.m. classes intended for kids 3-years old through first grade.

The cost is $30 for the four-week series in September and October and $25 for the three-week series in November.
