Local Third Grader Charlotte Kirby's Annual Toy Drive is in Full Swing; Provides Holiday Shopping to Families in Need

There’s simply nothing like watching a child rip into his or her gifts on Christmas morning.  The anticipation in their eyes and the squeals of delight are something most of us take for granted. For Charlotte Kirby, it was a feeling she wanted to make sure every family got to experience.  At just four years old, Kirby started a toy drive that was different from any other in this area.  She wanted to create a place where homeless or low income parents could “shop” for their kids, giving them the gift of picking out the toys themselves.

In the first year, Kirby collected around 1200 toys and hosted over 100 families at the Soup Opera in Fairmont.  The event has grown each year and now benefits Clarksburg City Mission as well.  Through the generosity of donors, she had been able to extend the invitation to families in local schools and organizations per the recommendations she receives.

Now in her fifth year, the Johnson Elementary third grader has collected over 3000 toys, allowing parents to supply Christmas for their families.  On Facebook, her Charlotte’s Annual Toy Drive page receives donations and inquiries from all over the nation.  She personally monitors the page and is involved in all aspects of the event.

Currently, Kirby plays football for the Bridgeport Pee Wee White team and participates in competitive cheerleading for Nexus All Stars.  She was selected as the Youth Volunteer of the Year for the Clarksburg City Mission last year and hopes to one day be a pastor and play for the NFL.  She was also recognized by West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin for her giving spirit and generosity.

For Charlotte, however, it’s all about providing a memorable Christmas morning experience and knowing that other children are enjoying new toys.  The event, which started with an idea from Charlotte, has now grown into a gift that keeps on giving.

Anyone wishing to donate new and unwrapped toys for infants through teens can drop them off at one of the following locations:  Bridgeport Physical Therapy, Cooper Law Office, City of Bridgeport, Gorilla Strength Fitness, Body Workz Fitness, Express Employment, Nexus All Stars, 1st University Athletics, or Bad Lizard Granite.  Additional information can be found under Charlotte’s Annual Toy Drive on Facebook.
