Meet BHS Senior Face Isaiah Williams

By Julie Perine on May 10, 2020 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

You've seen him on the soccer field, but get to know Isaiah Williams better below. He is today's Bridgeport High School Senior Face.

Hey Isaiah. Tell me about your involvement at BHS the last four years …
I played soccer all four years and was a captain during three of them. I earned all-county, all-conference, all-region, and finally achieved first team all-state my senior year.

What are your favorite high school memories?
My favorite high school memory is definitely Shop for Tots, but nothing compared to lunch. All my friends and I were always interested in different things, and despite all the differences, even back to middle school, we would have kids come up to our tables and start conversations all the time. I’m not very interactive, so this was a direct outlet that I, and “the boys,” could just meet up 5 days a week. Same spot.

What are your plans for college? Where do you plan to go and what do you plan to study?
My plans for college are to start with an undergraduate in psychology, but to hopefully pair it with another major such as business or economics. I plan to focus on psychology, but I won’t limit myself to that major because I’m interested in a great deal of the subjects that are offered at Fairmont State, which is where I plan to attend.

What is your life’s dream? Where do you see yourself 10 or 15 years from now?
My life’s dream is to have enough money to fund explorations and archaeological dig sites, such as in the Amazon, and in the ice sheets of Antarctica, because I feel that we have stepped away from our focus on learning new things, due to the fact that we think we already know. However, as more things become uncovered, it is clear that there is much more to learn and that is why I’m interested. That, of course, is my dream, but in 10 to 15 years I see myself studying and continuing to learn because nothing that I want will come in only the next 10 or so years.

Did any friends or teachers make a particular impact on you that you will carry with you beyond BHS?
Yes, Mrs. Lohmann, Mr. Lister, Mrs. Byrd, Mrs. Ramsey, Doctora Santilli, and Mrs. Bowles. All these teachers, at least with my exposure to them, held themselves to a higher accountability than just being teachers. So, with all these teachers, I found that time passed so much faster in their classes because they made it fun and curriculum that was unique to them. They were also more than just an authority figure, every single one of the teachers had some sort of relationship with me just through our many interactions in school. They then took it upon themselves to check up on me and all their many other students.

Do you work? Tell me about your job.
I don't have a job right now, but I plan on getting one soon.

Tell me some of your favorite things: Music, pastimes, teams, etc.
I enjoy listening to music at almost every second of the day. I would say that my favorite genre is rap, but I think all genres have music that I enjoy. Soccer though will forever be my first love, and with my athletic career coming to a close, I still feel my passion will carry on to supporting teams like Manchester United in England, and Italy on the international side.

Tell me your thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic/school lockdown. How has this impacted you personally during your senior year? What, if anything, have you learned from this?
The pandemic is sad, because we all rushed so fast to grow up that we didn’t take time to take it all in. Now that’s gone, and our lives carry on, so what I’ve learned is to slow down and soak it up.

Tell me a little about your family …
Anything I’ve become or been able to do has been a direct product of them, and not because they gave me things or were super easy on me, but because they were accepting of me no matter what and that makes a huge impact on any relationship.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Invest the time you spend in other people on the right ones. Hold your friends accountable because no one else will.
