Monday Night's Council Meeting to Feature the Red and Blue

By Julie Perine on April 11, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Monday night’s Bridgeport City Council meeting will feature plenty of red and blue. Three Bridgeport Middle School teams will be honored for their county championship victories.

Proclamations will be presented to the school’s danceline, wrestling and girls basketball teams.

“The City is very proud to publicly honor the achievement that these students have made for themselves, their school and their community," said City Clerk Andrea Kerr. "They should be very proud of themselves and we want to thank them for being champions for Bridgeport both on and off their playing field.”

The Bridgeport Middle School Danceline captured its third consecutive county championship Nov. 7 at  Lincoln High School. The team is coached by Jennifer Dodrill, assisted by Heather Skoloski. The team includes Victoria Catania, Jaryn Dodrill,  Taylor Frame,  Sophie Lopez, Kimmie Morris, Erica Balon, Sydny Guy, Megan Murray,  Madison Hess,  Grace Ebert, Kaylee Smith, Madelyn Lalama, Sophia Duarte, Rachel Reppert, Alyssa Dent, Maggie Lane, Heather Burd and Madison Smith.

Under the direction of first-year coach Jeff Hathaway and assistant coach Kenny Eddy, the Braves Wrestling Team captured the Harrison County Championship Feb. 12 at Liberty High School. In addition to the team win – its third consecutive – BMS had six wrestlers named individual county champions:  Maverick Eddy, Cooper Hineman, Josh Osborn, Andrew Kelley, Kevin Prunty and John Thomas. This was Eddy’s third year on the championship team and third year claiming individual champion honors – making him Bridgeport Middle School’s first three-year county champion. Other Braves wrestlers are Jimmy Secreto, James Ramsey, Addison Courtney, John Luke Massie, Josh Wojciecowicz, Logan Crayton, Noah Lafferty, Noah Drummond, Andrew Barlow, Bensen Bassell, Jeremiah Dolan, John Merica, Dylon Murphy and Marina Salinas.

For the first time in a decade, the Lady Braves captured the Harrison County Girls Basketball Championship held Feb. 22 at Lincoln High School. Under the coaching of David Wray, the team includes Emily Riggs, Carly Miller, Lacy Bryant, Rory Marple, Kaitlin Smith, Victoria Harbert, Kenzie Koon, Katelyn Stanley, Ashley Goots and Jordan Cole.

At the April 28 City Council meeting, the BMS soccer and cross-country teams - both boys and girls - will be honored for their respective county championships.

“We are thrilled that City Council is recognizing all of our teams who have won county championships this year,” said BMS Principal Carole Crawford, who offered her explanation of why the school produces so many championship teams. “I think they have a commitment from the community and are supported prior to entering middle school and as they come into school sports, they already have good training and then we have good coaches in place as the kids focus, balancing their practices and academics. They are good time managers and are respectful of their coaches.”

The only item of business slated for Monday night is a vote to appoint Ryan Haws to the Zoning Appeals Board. That appointment is to replace an opening left by Councilor Dustin Vincent.

“Dustin had served on the board and once he was appointed to Council, we needed to start seeking replacement to fill out the term,” said Community Development Director Randy Spellman. “We’ve only had once meeting since Dustin has been on Council and we thought with Ryan’s engineering experience and background that he would be a good fit on the board. He has accepted pending Council’s approval.”

Council will also take care of any necessary budget revisions and/or authorizations that may arise.

The meeting begins 7 p.m. at City Hall. The public is welcome.
