Simpson Elementary Health Fair Considered A Huge Success

From the time children a very young, they are fascinated with all things medical.  Carrying around their toy stethoscopes, they can be seen listening to everything from their dog’s heart to their own belly rumblings.  At Simpson Elementary School last week, students had the opportunity to take their love of health to a new level.  It was all part of a very elaborate Health Fair, held annually at the school to encourage and educate students about healthy habits.

The interactive event was coordinated by school nurse, Hannah Yetzer, and included community speakers and participatory events.  Students were taken inside an ambulance to sell how it really works, and shown how to do basic first aid techniques.   Med Express conducted a Teddy Bear Clinic where students could get hands-on experience with what it’s like to be a doctor and Mountain State Dermatology screened for skin cancer and told the kids about safe skin practices.

RAZE students from Bridgeport High School informed the students of the dangers involved with tobacco use.

“Early education can really reduce later usage of tobacco,” said RAZE advisor Anita Horner, “so participating in the health fair is a great opportunity to reach the elementary students.”

Dr. Cecil Holbert had the students’ full attention during the cardiac demonstration.  He brought in an actual deer heart for the students to see how the heart works and how to keep it healthy.  The health fair stressed the importance of maintaining a balance in order to be your healthiest.  This included physical, mental, spiritual, and intellectual aspects, as well as preventative care.
