Simpson Elementary Inspires Healthy Living Through Annual Health Fair

There was a very special guest at Simpson Elementary this week.  Clara Barton, Founder of the American Red Cross, visited the student via the History Alive Program.  It was all part of a very elaborate Health Fair, held annually at the school to encourage and educate students about healthy habits.

The interactive event was coordinated by school nurse, Wendy Carr, and included community speakers, participatory events and even a few canines.  Donnie Lindsay and Amy Romano demonstrated first aid techniques and showed the students what an ambulance looks like.  Cyndi Shaver educated the students about ear health and sign language and Hannah Yetzer covered information on nutrition.  The workshops were not only informative, but allowed the students to participate and ask questions.

The Bridgeport High School Dance Ensemble led the students in morning exercises on Thursday morning.  The FBI brought in some canines to demonstrate how they sniff for explosives and the RAZE students from Bridgeport High School informed the students of the dangers involved with tobacco use.  “Early education can really reduce later usage of tobacco,” said RAZE advisor Anita Horner, “so participating in the health fair is a great opportunity to reach the elementary students.”

Dr. Cecil Holbert had the students’ full attention during the cardiac demonstration.  He brought in an actual deer heart for the students to see how the heart works and how to keep it healthy.  The health fair stressed the importance of maintaining a balance in order to be your healthiest.  This included physical, mental, spiritual, and intellectual aspects, as well as preventative care.

Community support is vital to the success of programs such as this.  The following sponsors donated time, resources and money to help make the health fair an event the students won’t soon forget:  Mountain State Dermatology, Highland Hospital, Mike Romano, MSES Consultants, Goddard/Wagoner, Dr. Weidman, Dr. Lacy, Dr. Hazey, Buttons and Bows, Custom Detailers, A Mountain Clays, Bridgeport Physical Therapy, and Connect-Bridgeport.
