Simpson Elementary School Hosts Parade of Storybook Characters

Simpson Elementary School’s annual Reading Celebration Day came to life Wednesday afternoon.  From Captain Marvel and Cat in the Hat to Silly Sally and Fancy Nancy, an array of storybook characters paraded through the school hallways.

The event is organized by School Librarian Carrie Hill, who said the entourage of book personalities is a culmination of activities which highlight the importance of reading. Throughout the school year, students participate in a reading program, earning prizes for books read. Toward the end of the year, they are invited to choose one of their favorite reads and portray its star character. Students watching the parade were obviously delighted. Even some teachers got in on the action.

Principal Loria Reid said she thinks the character parade is an ideal finale to a year-long concentration on reading.

“It’s so much fun and it just brings the storybook to life,” she said. “Many times, kids read a book, set it down and forget about it. This makes them think a little bit deeper into what the character looks like and probably even what he or she feels like.”
