Unique Opportunity Available for Girls Interested in Cybersecurity; Cash Prizes Available

By Trina Runner on March 06, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Current high school students grew up watching Spy Kids, Agent Cody Banks and old episode of Kim Possible.  Many had cell phones early, raised virtual pets, and got really proficient at all things tech.  Those skills could now earn them prizes and their school could earn money, all while giving teen girls the opportunity to live out their childhood dreams.

The Girls Go Cyberstart Competiton registration just opened and will be remain open until March 25. Girls in grades 9-12 can register at girlsgocyberstart.org and they can participate individually or in teams of up to four people.  No experience in information technology is needed, but the experience offers a peek into one of the fastest growing career fields: cybersecurity.

The innovative competition is designed to encourage girls to explore careers in cybersecurity.  In the simulation, they will start as a “cyber agent” responsible for protecting an important operational base.  The students select the storyline and earn points by solving a series of cybersecurity-related puzzles, deciphering cryptography, applying research and using other skills to solve challenges. Winners advance to new levels with more difficult challenges.

West Virginia is partnering with SANS Institute to provide this opportunity for teen girls. Cybersecurity is growing and already faces a shortage of qualified professionals, namely women.  The competition gives participants insight into career options in this field and the chance to win professional certifications that are applicable around the world.

Schools who have at least five girls who excel at the program can win the full Cyberstart Game for the entire school and have a chance to win cash prizes.  Now in its second year, the competition encourages girls to consider STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career fields and empowers them through the challenges.  Last year, 27 schools in West Virginia participated and the creators are hoping that expands to include Bridgeport area this year.
