Featuring Easter Theme, West Virginia-Made Hard Cider, Last Winter Bridgeport Farmers Market Event Slated for Sunday at Bridgeport Conference Center

More than two dozen vendors – local farmers, growers, bakers and artisans – will gather Sunday at Bridgeport Conference Center for the last 2016-2017 winter event for Bridgeport Farmers Market.

The last indoor hurrah before the market moves outdoors for the regular summer season will feature an Easter market theme and will serve as a one-stop shop for holiday preparation.

“We’re hoping people will come out and buy their Easter dinner ingredients,” said Debbie Workman of the Bridgeport Farmers Market board of directors. “We’ll have locally-raised seasonal produce, farm-raised meats, farm fresh eggs and baked goods. We’ll even have some potted flowers for sale at this weekend’s market.”

In addition to the Easter dinner, Bridgeport Farmers Market has residents covered for Easter treats and basket fillers as a variety of Artisan-crafted items and jarred jams and jellies will be available for purchase.

The POP (Power of Produce) Club for kids will be pre-registering children for the market’s regular season. To date, about 300 area kids have participated in the club, exchanging tokens received for attending the market for fresh healthy foods available for purchase at the market.

“We’ll have a table set up and encourage people to stop by and sign up their kids,” Workman said.

As always, shoppers can take advantage of brunch prepared by the Bridgeport Conference Center culinary team. In addition to the meal - prepared with local foods available for purchase at the market – the brunch will be complimented by a Bloody Mary bar and cider tastings with Hawk Knob Hard Cider and Mead.

“They are based out of Lewisburg and they use West Virginia apples to make their cider,” Workman said. “This will be the first time they’ve been at the market.”

Workman and other BFM board members are excited about the implementation of Hawk Knob Hard Cider and Mead to the market. The cidery is owned and founded by Will Lewis and Josh Bennett, using traditional processes and 100 percent state-grown apples to create unfiltered Appalachian cider.
“We would like to see our area become a little bit more forward with the agritourism of our state,” Workman said. “We have such a vibrant farmers market in this area – not only ours here in Bridgeport, but several others in the area. This can really help bring attention to agriculture in our state.”

In an effort to introduce Hawk Knob Cider to the public and cross promote Sunday’s market, a representative of the cidery will be at Mia Margherita beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday. Including live music, the event will feature cider tastings and special menu items. Learn more about that event by contacting Mia Margherita. Bridgeport Farmers Market’s ninth regular summer season debuts May 21 on the market grounds at Charles Pointe. Indoor winter markets run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but the weekly outdoor markets will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
