Let's Get Fresh: The Market Goes to the Chefs

By Bob Workman on October 05, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

With one more Market left after today’s event I thought I would take some time to shine the LGF spotlight on one of the most popular features, week-in and week-out, of the BFM.

Wait, you didn’t know we were coming to the end of the summer Market season? Don’t fret, we simply pack up the tents and move the tables inside for the winter season. Starting November 9 and continuing the second Sunday of each month thru April, 2015, the Winter Market will he held inside the cozy confines of the Bridgeport Conference Center. Mark your calendars!

Now, about that popular feature I spoke of earlier. I speak, of course, of our weekly Chef’s Demos. BFM Board member Dave High really stepped up the effort this year to the point that we had a chef scheduled every Sunday of the season. Each week saw a professional chef use products that could be found at that week’s Market to create a recipe that anyone could make at home.

It could be they are so popular because of the free samples that are given out at the end of the demo. Usually, though, I think it’s because the chef has either created something unique or has demonstrated a classic technique. And, believe me, we’ve run the gamut of classic techniques this season! From pasta making to sushi rolling our local chefs really showed off their talents throughout the season.

While the Market gains from an “educate the public” standpoint the chefs gain thru exposure for their restaurant or foodservice operation. It’s the classic win-win situation. These are restaurants that have also made the commitment to support our local farmers by purchasing and featuring their products. The Market would like to thank the following chefs and their restaurants for participating in our demos this year. We urge you to support all of these folks by dining in one of their restaurants tonight!

·         Chef Chris Stearns (Chris has no restaurant but was our 2-time defending Country Roads Cook-Off Champion.)
·         Chefs Tim Goots and Pamela Stevens of Mia Margherita in Bridgeport
·         Chef Bear Ullman of CJ Maggie’s in Buckhannon and Elkins
·         Chef James DeCarlo of Vintage in Elkins
·         Chefs Mark Tasker and Donnie Orr of Table 9 in Morgantown
·         Chef Geoff Krauss of Thyme Bistro in Weston
·         Chef Mike Albarano of Market Bistro in Buckhannon
·         Chef Emily Smith-Zimmerman of Atomic Grill in Morgantown
·         Chefs Robert Tiano and Don Vilain of Bridgeport Conference Center
·         Chef Jay Mahoney and his students from Pierpont Culinary Academy

Be sure to come back here next week as Let’s Get Fresh will present our now annual Top Ten Things That Happened at the Market this season!

Until then, Stay Fresh!
