By Julie Perine on April 21, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The menu has been selected for the April 28 Bridgeport Farmers Market Community Dinner and it has springtime and local foods written all over it.

To be prepared by the culinary staff of Bridgeport Conference Center and served on site is a meal featuring spring chicken with Fish Hawk ramp and bacon dumplings and lemon thyme rainbow trout with tomato olive relish. The dining event will start with roasted red pepper and crab bisque and Appalachian appetizers, followed by field greens salad and rustic breads and tasty spreads. Entrees will be accompanied by a smoked sea salt roasted potato medley and Green Acres braised greens with smoked pork belly. Desserts will include lemon shortcake, fruits of the forest pie and white chocolate raspberry cake.

For $20, area adults can attend the event; the first BFM Community Dinner of 2015. Children age 12 and under can eat for $12. For tickets, call 304-669-4340 or 304-808-3000.

In addition to a meal prepared with locally-raised food products, the community dinner will feature a special announcement, said BFM President Debbie Workman.

“We’ll be announcing our new children’s activity for summer,” she said. “We’ve been wanting for years – and have, on and off – hosted children’s activities at the market and it has been hard to do so consistently. But we have come up with something.”

Proceeds raised at this and other community dinners helps sustain efforts of Bridgeport Farmers Market, which is open weekly through the spring, summer and fall months. Starting May 17, the outdoor market at Charles Pointe will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. Early markets will feature fresh local crops including kale, spinach, Swiss chard, asparagus, spring onions and strawberries. More and more produce will be available as the season progresses, Workman said. The market also features flowers, farm-raised beef, chicken and pork, home baked goods and works of local crafters.
