Winter Market Debuts Sunday at Bridgeport Conference Center

It’s already winter market season for Bridgeport Farmers Market with the 2014 debut event happening this Sunday. Through April, the market will be held the second Sunday of each month 11 a.m.-2 p.m. inside Bridgeport Conference Center at Charles Pointe.

Though market browsers will be shopping indoors, they won’t find a big difference in merchandise from the summer season, said BFM president Debbie Workman.
Among 30 vendors will be a handful specializing in produce.

“Usually we only have a couple during the winter market, but it’s increasing because our small farmers are using high tunnels,” Workman said. “You’re not going to find corn or tomatoes, but you will find broccoli, cabbage, butternut squash and lots of mixed greens, lettuces, beets and things like that.”

Also available will be a variety of proteins, including farm-raised chicken, beef, pork and lamb.

“We’ll also have farm-raised turkeys available for Thanksgiving dinner,” Workman said. “They can be purchased Sunday or you can pre-order and pick it up the week of Thanksgiving.”

The market will also feature farm fresh eggs, honey, flowers and products made by West Virginia artisans – all great holiday gift ideas, Workman said.

And Bridgeport Farmers Market’s signature brunch will continue into the winter season. Prepared by Bridgeport Conference Center, the brunch will feature local foods. This Sunday, 15 percent of the proceeds will benefit the United Way of Harrison County.

There’s yet another way to help locals by attending Bridgeport Farmers Market.

“This Sunday – and also the holiday market on Dec. 14 – we are asking everyone who comes to bring one non-perishable food item, which will be donated to Shepherd’s Corner,” Workman said. “Those who do that will be entered into a drawing for a $30 market gift certificate.”

The Dec. 14 holiday market will also feature an ugly Christmas sweater event. Vendors and shoppers alike are asked to dress for that special occasion.

As always, resident musician Rus Reppert will be on hand this Sunday to provide guitar music.
