Floral Design with Cara: Prom Flower Etiquette

By Cara Ewald on April 03, 2014 from Floral Design with Cara via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Prom - short for promenade - is a semi-formal gathering of high school students. Flowers are always a hit, and a great way to start the special evening.  Traditionally, girls wear a corsage, given to them by their dates, and girls give boys matching boutonnières to be worn on their lapels.

Corsages - young men take note:
Gentlemen offer young ladies a corsage usually worn on their wrist, but may be pinned to the bodice or shoulder strap of their dress. The corsage should coordinate with your date's dress, so be sure that you ask your date what color she is wearing. Order the corsage at least one week in advance. Put the corsage in the refrigerator until its time to pick up your date. Young men should open the corsage box before handing it to his date. These days, wrist corsages are the favorite of most young women. To put on a wrist corsage, turn the inside of the wrist up and slip on the corsage, that way gravity keeps the flowers hanging down and from being damaged. To make a good impression on your date's parents, you may bring a small bouquet of flowers and give to her mother

Boutonnieres - young ladies take note:
It is customary for a young woman to offer her date a boutonniere. Ladies should pin the boutonniere to their date's jacket, making sure the pin is under the lapel. The boutonniere is to be worn on the left lapel of the young man's jacket. Fellows, if your date is having trouble pinning the boutonniere on your lapel, it is ok to offer assistance.  Like corsages, boutonnieres are to be ordered at least one week in advance from a florist.  It should be picked up on the day of the prom, and kept in the refrigerator until your date arrives to pick you up.

Safety - for everyone:
Stay safe, stay sober.  Enjoy the prom night experience.  You want to remember this evening as a special night in your life, not a tragedy that could have been avoided.

Prom is a special night for all young men and women.  Prom flowers are available at Blooms and other florists.  Until next time --- Happy Prom!
