Time Travel: A Historic Bridgeport Mill and Hewes Avenue in Clarksburg Buried Under Snow

By Dick Duez on December 14, 2014 from History Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This is a photo of the Davidson and Hurry Mill around 1914. It was located in the bend on Water Street before it goes into Faris Acres and was established around 1771 by James Anderson. Around 1800, it was under the ownership of Ephraim Smith and later obtained by Joseph Johnson through marriage to Smith's daughter. Johnson later became Virginia's governor. After the governor's death his neighbors on Johnson Avenue bought the mill in the 1870s. The B&O Railroad can be seen to the right as it can today.

This photo from 1950 shows men clearing a path in front of Wayne Feeds Store in Clarksburg. The business is believed to have been located on Hewes Avenue.

Editor's Note: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection. Duez, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at grinder12@frontier.com.
