Bridgeport's favorite son Michael Benedum arrives from Pittsburg for the dedication of the Bridgeport pool in 1958. He was the benefactor for the entire Benedum Civic Center complex built on the same property he was born on in 1869. Benedum died the following year .

This is a photo of John Brown’s Fort that was erected in 1848 originally as the fire station for the armory at Harpers Ferry. Brown captured it in 1859 in his attempt to encourage black slaves to revolt but was overwhelmed by Robert E. Lee’s union forces and taken prisoner.  The building has been disassembled several times and was once at the Chicago World’s Fair and now stands not far from its original location in Harpers Ferry.

Editor's Note: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection. Duez, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at grinder12@frontier.com.
