Time Travel: Cup of Coffee in City in 1963 and Start of Interstate 79 with Earth Moving One Year Earlier

By Dick Duez on July 01, 2018 from History Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Anyone remember the coffee shop sitting on the corner of Main Street and Center Street? This is a photo of the inside taken in 1963. The building was built in 1903 and became the first city building before serving other functions, including a bakery. It was demolished on August  11, 2003. The old post office and Home Hardware can be seen through the windows on the other side of Main Street.
This is the beginning of Interstate 79  during a groundbreaking ceremony in 1962. Shown, from left, is an employee of J.F. Allen Company and then Governor Wally Barron and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Luther H. Hodges. The area is just off of U.S. Route 250 South  in Fairmont. The original proposal had the interstate going between Bridgeport and Grafton, but both Bridgeport and Clarksburg protested that with Bridgeport -  even then - concerned about Main Street traffic issues and Clarksburg concerned about being completely cut off from interstate access.

Editor's Note: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard
"Dick" Duez's collection. Duez, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at dick.do@frontier.com.
