Time Travel: Former City Police Chief on Wedding Day and the Philippi Covered Bridge after 1989 Fire

By Dick Duez on March 21, 2021 from History Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This photo, provided by Tom Kinney, shows former Bridgeport Police Chief John Diamond, who has since passed, on his wedding day. He is shown with the former Mary Kniska. Chief Diamond started as a patrol officer with the city in 1950.
The Philippi Covered Bridge was built in 1858 and survived the Civil War and the flood of 1985. It did not fare nearly as well from a fire in 1989 that left it down to its old timbers. The bridge has since been restored and reopened to traffic.

Editor's Note: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection. Duez, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at dick.do@citynet.net.
