Time Travel: Unbeaten Bridgeport Junior High Football Team and a 1938 Osage Convenience Store

By Dick Duez on April 24, 2016 from History Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This is part of a collection of old sports photographs submitted to Connect-Bridgeport and for this blog by Ann Nicewarner that were part of her father-in-law's collection - the late Phil "Sonny" Nicewarner. This photo shows, front row, from left Jerry Armentrout, Steve Stout (listed as Stout Stout, but appears to be a young Steve), Scott Koepka, Mike Kelly and Vincent Pinti. Second row, from left, is Preston Rader, Rusty Conley, Jay Leuliette, Don Amsler,Dana Mick, Mike Marks and Doug Harbert. The team went undefeated that year, according to the book with a 14-6 win over Summit Park, a 30-0 win over North View, an 8-0 win over Gore, a 22-6 victory against Broadway, a 16-0 win over Pruntytown, a win by a 26-0 score over Norwood and a season-ending 8-6 victory against Washington Irving.
This photo shows a time period when convenience stores were locally owned and not part of a national chain. This is the Osage Spot, where you could get a Coke, a beer, candy, tobacco and shoot some pool. This photo is from 1938.

Editor's Note: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection. Duez, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at dick.do@frontier.com.
