It's Happening: BHS Student Dancers Deliver More than Entertainment

By Julie Perine on May 17, 2015 from It’s Happening via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Friday night, I attended the Bridgeport High School Dance Ensemble concert and witnessed some impressive dance skills.

Choreographed jazz, ballet, hip-hop and jazz numbers were executed with graceful, synchronized, fluid movements. Though I was captivated by the actual dancing, I also took notice of the characteristics of these dedicated students.

During each group number, I picked out a dancer to really watch – not just the movements, but also the inner glow with which they executed them. In each case, I saw passion; passion for performance which fueled their perseverance to practice and practice, which culminated into near flawless deliveries. But it was more than that. In the girls’ eyes, I saw a self-assuredness which has been nurtured by dance teachers, parents and other supporters. It was shining through as bright as the lights on the stage.

I was impressed with the way the dancers’ carried themselves. Some, I know, have gone through trying times but with their heads held high, they expressed themselves through an art which they have found to be an important, creative outlet.

In addition to numbers choreographed by their instructor, guest choreographers or alumni dancers, each senior member of the dance ensemble choreographed a solo piece with their choice of music and dance type. They definitely spoke through those works. Both group and solo dances told stories – from struggles and challenges to hope and future goals. I clapped. I also laughed and cried. And I might add that the Dance of Hope paying tribute to cancer victims was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Friday’s dance concert didn’t just feature longtime dance students, but also high school students brand new to dance – including members of the Indian baseball team. Fresh off a victory over RCB – one which kept them alive in the sectionals – the guys graced the dance stage, uniforms, field dust
and all.  Though the vast difference in skill level, those kids all came
together as a unit, delivering performances - including the fancy free "Footloose" and spirited "Let's Hear it For the Boys" - that were refreshing and fun. It wasn't about outdoing each other.  It was a group of friends sharing a high school moment, one which would become a longtime memory.

I want to applaud Alicia Kinsey, Cindy Timms Pulice, all of the BHS dancers, guest performers and those behind the scenes for a quality show. It was entertainment at its finest – and so much more.
