It's Happening: BHS Supporting Karen Smith in Her Fight with Cancer

By Julie Perine on October 13, 2019 from It’s Happening via Connect-Bridgeport.com

For two decades, Karen Smith has been an integral part of Bridgeport High School. The head school custodian has been a true friend to all who roam the halls. Now, those students and fellow staff members are reaching out to show Karen how much she means to all of them.

Just about a month ago, Karen learned she had stage 4 liver cancer. She will soon leave for Cleveland Clinic to seek treatment. For her battle, the students of BHS recently pooled cash during lunch, collecting $1,300 for their friend. Faculty and administration and other staff members added $1,500 to the donation, truly touching Karen and her husband John, a custodian and friend to all at Bridgeport Middle School.

The couple, who lives in the local area, reunited and married many years after attending elementary school together.

Karen’s attitude remains optimistic and though she can no longer work, she continues to think of her friends at BHS. Recently, she visited to express her appreciation for their support.

Through the years, hundreds of students who have been especially close with Karen have received that same emotional and monetary support when they graduated high school.

The Tribe wishes Karen well and extends the opportunity to members of the public to support her in her fight with cancer by remembering her in prayer, sending cards and/or a donation to help with medical and travel expenses.

Checks can be made payable to Karen Smith and mailed to Bridgeport High School, 515 Johnson Avenue, Bridgeport, WV 26330.
