It's Happening: The Short Suit; Blurring the Fashion Lines

By Julie Perine on June 22, 2014 from It’s Happening via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It was during a recent, hot Sunday that my family was discussing the fact that it seemed a bit unfair that men had to wear long pants and a jacket to be considered dressed up. Women, after all, can sport a sundress and a pair of strappy sandals and pass the dress code with flying colors.

When it comes to thinking along these lines, others obviously have followed suit. My ears perked right up the other day when I caught a morning TV segment about a new fashion trend: The men’s short suit.

According to “Business Insider,” the look has gone mainstream, but I won’t be surprised if I see guys swimming against the current on this one.

The short suit features a traditional sport coat, but rather than trousers, it’s paired with what I can best describe as Bermuda shorts. J. Crew and Barneys are among retailers carrying the ensemble. It was Lanvin Paris which created the tuxedo version worn by Pharrell Williams at the 2014 Academy Awards – giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “Blurred Lines.”

Choosing footwear to complement this look is a whole other dilemma, not to mention that this certainly takes the sexy out of a suit. But, hey, I'm open-minded when it comes to fashion; to each his own. It seems, however, that if it's ok to lose the bottom part of the pants, you might as well lose the jacket, too.

I’m anxious to see where – and if – the look will be spotted.

Who knows? Other fashion trends have been a little on the strange side; the poncho, leisure suit and thong, included. And it's not the first time that men have sported women-inspired fashions. You have heard of the murse - and meggings, haven't you?
