It's Happening: The Silver Lining in All Those Snow Clouds

By Julie Perine on February 22, 2015 from It’s Happening via Connect-Bridgeport.com

During recent days, the snow has fallen – and continued to fall. Temperatures have dipped to well below
average and combined, scenarios have resulted in school closings and cancelation of activities.

So what have you been doing? Building snowmen and making snow angels? Crafting or playing board games with the kiddos? It seems that sometimes when we’re cooped up, the wheels of the imagination go into high gear and thus, we turn out a lot of memories.

I’ve enjoyed hearing from family and friends about how they have spent these prime winter days – and/or attempted to cure cabin fever. Driving down the road – and scanning social media – I’ve seen some heartwarming sights. I’ve also been impressed with creativity displayed. Photos and descriptions of projects have put a smile on my face – and even induced a couple of laughs.

This week of snow days has been one for the books. Each day, as late-afternoon to early-evening has approached, the anticipated announcement has come. I would venture to say that in most households, that news has been met with excitement. And I can tell you that in my household, that news has sometimes been followed with the onset of impromptu plans. There have been the late-night trips to friends’ houses. Sometimes it’s while driving in PJs and snow boots that you can have the best conversations with your teen.

Days off from school can result in extra time with friends; even opportunities to test drive entrepreneurship. Shoveling snow is not only a way to earn some spending money, but also a chance to learn good interaction skills.

By doing a little informal survey, I’ve heard of some pretty cool ways which parents have kept younger kids entertained – from freezing water balloons filled with colored water to recycling cardboard boxes into fancy castles. You don’t think that’s education in action?

No spring break for students? Afraid not. But while a foot or so of the white stuff has fallen upon us, so has perhaps the silver linings of those snow clouds. That’s good stuff.

Sometimes while we're worrying about what's not going to happen, some pretty good things do happen. Life is funny that way.
