Off the Shelf: Independence Day and July Fun

By Sharon Saye on July 02, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library will be closed on Friday, July 4th for the Independence Day holiday.  It will be open on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. for its regular hours.

July sees the end of both summer reading programs, but there are still activities in which to participate.  The West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center returns on July 7th at 6 p.m.  All ages are welcome, and the chance to see these beautiful birds is not one to miss.  The Department of Natural Resources is providing a Bat Simulation Show at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8th.

The Summer Reading program for children ends with a grand finale at the Bridgeport City Park from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9th.  There is a magician, games, prizes and food.  All participants in the summer reading program are welcome to attend.

Local author, Debbie Gladwell, will be available on Saturday, July 12th, from 2- 3 p.m. to sign her new book, “The Adventures of Shy Spy Time Traveler.”

Sand Art with artistic and colorful creations is scheduled for July 24th at 6 p.m.  Registration is required.  And our regular Story Time continues all summer at 10:30 a.m. every Friday.

The Summer Reading Program for adults continues until the end of July and concludes with its grand finale on July 29th from 5-8 p.m. with dinner, dessert and book discussion and signing by Geoffrey Fuller and Daleen Berry who have written a new book, “Pretty Little Killers: The Truth Behind the Savage Murder of Skylar Neese.”

Adult participants still get a chance when they check out books to win a tote bag loaded with books, puzzles, journals, lights, etc.  A winner is drawn weekly and we still have three weeks to go.

The “Tea & Talk” program continues every Monday at 12:30 p.m. as participants discuss the episodes of the new PBS series, “Endeavor.”  Teens continue on Mondays with their regular programs from 6-8 p.m. except for July 7th because of the “Raptor” program.

The monthly book talk group is reading “When I Found You” by Catherine Ryan Hyde and will discuss it on Wednesday, July 16th at 4 p.m.  Knitting and needlework fans have formed a group, “The Colorful Yarns” which will meet on Tuesday, July 22nd, at 6:30 p.m.

July is not quite as busy as June, but it is certainly busy enough.  So mark your calendars and take advantage of these entertaining programs.
